Thesis
Yes the U.S. was justified in dropping the Atomic Bomb on the city of Hiroshima on 6 August 1945. It was a good call to action for the U.S. to take, since they had suffered the loss of thousands of men, both military and civilian, and they didn't want to lose more men in an invasion so they decided on the bombing. They had also given the city of Hiroshima a few days to surrender which they never did so the U.S. took action.

It is our view that the U.S. was justified in dropping the Atomic bomb on Hiroshima. When Japan took a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor U.S. military forces, it killed thousands of men and the message of an attack never reached the president therefore the U.S. was uninformed and unprepared for an attack. There are a few main aspects supporting our view.

8/9/45: Excerpt from public statement by President Truman. This was the second time he had publicly given reasons for using the atomic bomb on Japan:
"The world will note that the first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, a military base. That was because we wished in this first attack to avoid, insofar as possible, the killing of civilians. But that attack is only a warning of things to come. If Japan does not surrender, bombs will have to be dropped on her war industries and, unfortunately, thousands of civilian lives will be lost. According to a dairy entry of Harry Truman's the U.S felt the the need to drop the bomb because the Japanese kept the war going and all they wanted to do is end it. |
